Most of the cost is ground turkey ($5.20) and kidney beans ($2.60). With oil, spices and staples already at home, the shop drops to about $6.36. Prices are estimated for the amount used, at average US grocery prices (November 2026).

Steps

  1. Dice the onion and mince the garlic cloves. Drain and rinse the kidney beans.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a Dutch oven or large pot over medium heat. Add the diced onion and ground turkey, breaking the meat apart with a spoon, and cook for 6 to 8 minutes until the turkey is no longer pink and reaches at least 165°F (74°C).
  3. Add the minced garlic, chili powder, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Stir constantly for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the canned tomatoes with their juices, drained kidney beans, and chicken broth, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Bring the liquid to a boil over medium-high heat.
  5. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot partially, and simmer gently for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened and flavors have blended.
  6. Ladle the chili into bowls and serve hot with sliced avocado, fresh cilantro, or dairy-free sour cream if desired.
