Most of the cost is ribeye steak, thinly sliced ($15.91) and provolone cheese slices ($4.32). With oil, spices and staples already at home, the shop drops to about $21.09. Prices are estimated for the amount used, at average US grocery prices (November 2026).

Steps

  1. Season the sliced ribeye steak evenly with the kosher salt and black pepper.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the yellow onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, translucent, and golden brown, 7 to 9 minutes, then transfer to a plate.
  3. Increase heat to high and add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet. Add the steak in an even layer and sear undisturbed for 1 to 2 minutes until browned on the bottom, then toss and chop with a spatula for 1 to 2 minutes until no longer pink.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low, return the cooked onions to the pan, and drizzle in the Worcestershire sauce. Toss together for about 1 minute until thoroughly heated through and combined.
  5. Separate the steak and onion mixture into 4 portions in the skillet. Place 2 slices of provolone cheese over each portion, cover the skillet with a lid, and heat for 1 to 2 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  6. Slide a wide spatula under each cheesy portion and transfer into the split hoagie rolls. Serve immediately while hot.
